The only way to perfect a kick is by repetition. There are three phases for practicing most of the basic kicks such as groin kick, knee kick, mae geri, mawashi geri etc. All three of these methods need to be practiced for your kick to be efficient.
Method1
EditThe four-step method:
- 1Raise your knee: The position varies from kick to kick. If you are doing a groin kick, your toes will be pointing downward and thighs parallel to the ground. Hold it in this position and balance for 10 seconds.
- 2Extend your leg: The final position of this 'stance' is how you are when your kick connects. Hold this for another 10 seconds.
- 3Back to step one: Fold your leg back, but keep your knee raised as you were in step one. Hold for 10 seconds
- 4Come back to relaxed position. Repeat with the same leg for 10 reps(depends on the practitioner).
Method2
EditThe two-step method:
- 1Combine the first two steps in method one. Raise your knee and throw the kick in a fluid motion, and hold it there. You might stumble at first, but try to increase your time as you practice.
- 2Bring back your leg to the starting position. This should be done fast, because in karate it is important to pull back even faster than you throw the kick. It is ideal to bring your leg back to a stance from where you can throw the next kick without moving. Check http://www.wikihow.com/Perform-a-Correct-Front-Stance-in-Shotokan-Karate
Method3
EditThe one-step method:
- 1This is simply kicking and pulling back, as you would do when actually performing a kick.It is ideal to do this after the reps of methods one and two.
- 2For the advanced kicks such as spinning kicks, this is the only step that works.

EditTips
- Using bags are effective for practicing kicks. But this depends on the kick you are doing. For the basic kicks such as yoko geri, mae geri etc, a bag is useful. But it is better to practice spinning kicks and most of the advanced kicks without a bag.
- As you advance, create your own combos. Practice the same kick at different levels. A quick sequence of mawashi geri to the knee and then to the face is very hard to block.
- Concentrating on the four step method can help you increase your balance.
- Practice kicking as you step or jump forward, backward and sidewards. This is sure to help you in a fight.
